Medulloblastoma is a rare type of tumor that originates in the spinal cord, the vital area that controls the body's motor and sensory functions.

This tumor is a primary neuroblastoma that affects the central nervous system (CNS), and is usually classified as one of the tumors that affect children and adults in varying degrees, and in this article, we will shed light on the causes, symptoms and available treatments, with reference to approved scientific medical sources.

Medulloblastoma is a tumor that originates in the spinal cord, usually in the cervical, temporal or lumbar region, and medulloblastomas may be localized or spread to other areas of the central nervous system, and this type of tumor is often considered benign, but in some rare cases, it may develop into malignant and cause severe neurological complications.

This disease poses a neurological threat because it interferes with the spinal cord's ability to send electrical signals to different parts of the body, leading to impaired movement, feeling or coordination between organs, and medulloblastoma can cause symptoms such as back pain, paralysis, or loss of sensation in certain parts of the body, and the US National Cancer Institute (NCI) has indicated that this type of tumor may pose diagnostic and treatment challenges due to its location in the spinal cord.

Medulloblastoma symptoms

Symptoms that may indicate the presence of a medulloblastoma include

Severe back pain: One of the most common symptoms, which may be the result of pressure from the tumor on the nerves.

Changes in movement and balance: If the tumor affects the motor nerves, the patient may have difficulty moving or coordinating, and according to the National Institute of Health (NIH) in its report on neuroblastoma, patients can have difficulty walking or moving due to the destruction of motor nerves.

Loss of sensation: This can occur due to the destruction of sensory nerves in the spinal cord. Many doctors attribute this symptom to the tumor pressing on the sensory nerves in the affected area.

Diagnosis of medulloblastoma

In order to diagnose medulloblastoma, several medical techniques are used such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) scans, these tests can help determine the size and location of the tumor, making it easier for doctors to determine the best treatment methods, according to a study published in the European Cancer Journal, MRI is one of the most effective tools in diagnosing spinal cord tumors.

Treatments available for medulloblastoma

Treatments available for medulloblastoma depend on the size of the tumor, its location, and the degree to which it affects the nervous system:

Surgery: In many cases, surgery is the first choice for medulloblastoma removal, and surgery aims to remove as much of the tumor as possible without causing significant nerve damage.

Radiation therapy: If it is difficult to completely remove the tumor with surgery, or if the tumor recurs after surgery, doctors may resort to radiation therapy. According to the American Association for Neurological Surgery, radiation therapy is effective in shrinking tumors that are difficult to reach surgically.
