Nanotechnology in medicine is one of the most exciting innovations that has revolutionized diagnosis, treatment and healthcare as a whole, as doctors can use very small particles to direct treatment only to affected cells without compromising healthy ones.

The word nano comes from the Greek word nano, which means “dwarf,” and nanoparticles are defined as single particles whose dimensions do not exceed 100 nanometers, and the unique properties and features of nanoparticles are due to their small size, in addition to their chemical composition and surface structure, and nanomaterials take many forms, each of which has a structure, properties and a measure of their diameter and length, and each has distinctive uses as well.

Medical revolution

Nanotechnology in medicine is a branch of science used by doctors to improve and develop treatments and diagnostic methods, and these techniques take advantage of the properties of materials and objects on the nanometer scale to facilitate and improve drug delivery and target diseases with greater accuracy, and nanotechnology is used in multiple fields such as disease diagnosis, tumor treatment, targeted drug release and delivery to targeted places in the body, and thanks to technology, the effectiveness of treatments can improve, reduce side effects and improve patient outcomes, in the future, nanotechnology is expected to change the future of advanced treatments and improve the quality of healthcare.

Statistics say that by 2025, more than 50% of the world's population will have chronic diseases such as cancer and diabetes, and here comes nanotechnology in medicine to significantly change the future of advanced treatments and improve the quality of healthcare, although it faces challenges such as ensuring safety, health impact, and cost.

Many uses

Nanotechnology is used in medicine for various purposes, as the development of targeted delivery systems is one of the important applications of this technology. Nanotechnology allows targeting drug delivery to specific parts of the body with high precision, so that the impact on healthy tissues is avoided, thanks to the use of nanotechnology, the accumulation of drugs in targeted sites can be improved, which enhances the effectiveness of treatment and minimizes its side effects, according to the specialized scientific journal Faisal.

Nanotechnology is also used in the development of targeted drugs, where the drug is loaded into nanoparticles that specifically target disease cells, and these targeted drugs increase the effectiveness of treatment and minimize side effects on healthy cells.

Recent studies have also proven the ability of nanotechnology to develop materials and systems that contribute to addressing and dealing with the Corona pandemic, in the fields of medical diagnosis, laboratory testing, the development of virus-killing sterilizers, and the manufacture of protective and isolation clothing.

With this technology, body cells can be easily photographed, as if we were taking ordinary photos of them, and these cells can be controlled and shaped into different shapes, in addition to using the manufactured nanoliposomes as delivery systems for anti-cancer drugs and vaccines, and gold nanoparticles are used in home testing devices to detect pregnancy.

In the field of surgeries, the newspaper “Nano Letters” revealed that the company “Corvus” made a small nanometer-sized robot used as an assistant to doctors in critical and dangerous surgeries, where the doctor can control the robot by a special device, which helps in accomplishing the operation with high efficiency and accuracy Of course, it is better than traditional methods of surgeries and less risky, as the doctor uses a joystick that enables him to control the robot arm that carries micro devices and a miniature camera, in order to turn large movements into small movements, and this allows more surgical precision.

Optimization and innovation in nanotechnology

Since 2021, a team of researchers at Germany's renowned Jena University Hospital has been working to create multifunctional magnetic nanoparticles to diagnose and treat cancer. These nanoparticles find and accumulate malignant cells in any part of the body, and depending on the type of nanoparticle, this helps oncologists accurately detect the tumor, infected lymph nodes, and even micrometastases in any organs and tissues, enhance the effect of chemotherapy drugs, and precise drug delivery, as the modified nanoparticles act as drug carriers, delivering them in high concentrations to tumor foci.

It is expected that nanotechnology will continue to develop and improve in the future, and nanotechnology research is directed towards improving the effectiveness of treatments and developing new technologies, nanotechnology can radically change the medical future, with improving the quality of healthcare, increasing the effectiveness of treatments and minimizing potential side effects, it will continue to become a vital area of research and development in medicine.
