Gastritis, indigestion, stomach lining inflammation, acute gastritis, chronic gastritis, is a condition affecting the stomach lining. It can appear suddenly (acute gastritis) or develop gradually (chronic gastritis).

chronic gastritis affects two in every 10,000 people, while acute gastritis is more common, impacting eight out of every 1,000 individuals,According to Medical News Today.

What Causes Gastritis?

Gastritis can be triggered by various factors, including:

-Helicobacter pylori infection: A bacterium that lives in the stomach lining, potentially causing ulcers or even stomach cancer if untreated.

-Pernicious anemia: A condition in which the stomach lacks a substance essential for absorbing vitamin B12.

-Bile reflux: The backflow of bile into the stomach.

-Excessive alcohol consumption, chronic stress, persistent vomiting, or the use of certain medications (such as aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs).

-Bacterial or viral infections.

-Autoimmune disorders.

-Untreated gastritis can lead to severe stomach bleeding and increase the risk of stomach cancer.

What Are the Symptoms of Gastritis?

Symptoms vary among patients, and some may not show any signs. However, common symptoms include:

-Nausea.

-Abdominal bloating.

-Vomiting.

-Indigestion.

-Hiccups.

-Loss of appetite.

-Vomiting blood or materials resembling coffee grounds.

-Black, tar-like stools.

How Is Gastritis Diagnosed?

Diagnosis involves several steps:

-Physical examination and medical history review.

-Endoscopy: A thin tube with a camera is inserted to examine the stomach lining, with the option to take a biopsy for tissue analysis.

-Blood tests: To check for anemia or vitamin B12-related issues.

-Stool tests: To detect the presence of blood, indicating gastritis.

-Mineral and vitamin level testing: If malabsorption is suspected.

How Is Gastritis Treated?

Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may include:

-Antacids: To reduce stomach acid and alleviate symptoms.

-Antibiotics: To treat gastritis caused by Helicobacter pylori.

-Avoiding irritants: Such as spicy or heavily seasoned foods.

-Stopping nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): If they are the cause.

Prognosis of Gastritis

Most gastritis cases improve quickly with treatment, but it is essential to consult a doctor before altering or stopping any prescribed medication.
